Internal Democracy
RECENTLY, 12 opposition groups
in India rallied in extraordinary solidarity to fully support the call by the
Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) farmers' union for a nationwide protest to mark six
months of protests this week. It was an organizational game. There was
electricity, medical facilities, food supply, bathing facilities, sleeping and
counting. An old saying goes that no one living near Sikh gurdwara will go
hungry. Langar takes care of everything regardless of religious differences.
They have successfully fulfilled
the government's expectation that, if ignored, they will pack up. They didn't.
It was a remarkable career and they followed the guidelines of Covid, a lesson
in political parties.
Among the 12 political parties
are the Sonia Gandhi Congress, the Thinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee and
the Nationalist Congress of Sharad Pawar. There was no Mayawati of the UP. A
joint statement issued by senior leaders of some of these groups said,
"The central government must stop the unrest and start negotiations with
SKM immediately." On May 12, opposition leaders had jointly written to
Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that farm rules be repealed.
Political parties in India have failed
constitutionally.
The church has a long history in
politics, said British Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Uttar Pradesh elections
are expected next year; National elections will be held in 2024. Mayawati has
given sufficient notice that his support relies on non-policy matters. And it
is not certain that others will keep their word. Team unity is a long-term
dream. The internal situation of the groups creates instantaneous discomfort.
Shiv Sena is a family problem of the son of its founder Uddhav Thackeray, the
prime minister of Maharashtra. Sharad Pawar calls out his song. Congress
policies are Sonia Gandhi's well-kept secret. His Congress in particular is a
one-man show. He is determined to make his son Rahul his successor. Partymen,
block a few stocks, you disagree.
While the voters' meeting was
finishing its work, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, chairman of the writing committee, spoke
frankly in 1949, stating that “no matter how good the constitution is, it will
definitely get worse because those who are called to work are bad. No matter
how bad the constitution is, it can turn out to be good if those who are called
to work become more positive. The effectiveness of the constitution is not
entirely dependent on the nature of the constitution. The constitution can only
give organs of state such as the legislature, authorities and the judiciary.
The factors that apply to those organs of state are the people and political
parties that they will establish as their own objects of interest and their own
political affiliations. Who can say how the people of India and their groups
will behave? ”
It is now 70 years since the
constitution took effect. He would be a brave man who could not say that
political parties should act in accordance with Ambedkar's expectations. The
political system did not live up to the requirements of the constitutional
system. It is not a failed constitution. It is the political parties and
politicians who have failed in the constitution.
Self-esteem is too late. Indians
need to prepare political parties for the constitution. A democratic
constitution cannot be implemented by non-democratic parties. Further, the
ruling party, Congress, has not yet held its own party elections. There are no signs
to do this anytime soon. Promises have been made several times in recent months
but have been broken many times.
In 1980, the then chief
electoral commissioner S. Shakdhar said “political parties make strong demands
for the administration of free and fair elections in the legislature, but
choose to ignore the application of the same principles when it comes to the
functioning of their party organizations. It was revealed before me… that the
parties did not follow their own principles. They have no party selection. They
work for years in a certain way. ”Later, he presented his report in the 1980
general election to parliament, citing three major shortcomings. One was that
even the basic observance of constitutional provisions did not exist; the second
was the failure to hold party elections, and the last was about a lack of
accountability in the general membership. This disability in groups is still
ongoing.
In a democracy in Parliament, it
is very important that there are strong, well-organized parties that have roots
in the people because the government of Parliament is heavily supported in
conferences. The best punishment for keeping the agreements by the ruling party
is the political check of the opposition parties. A good guarantee of the
maintenance of democratic processes by the ruling party is its democratic
status.
Beyond Binaries: Rethinking the
legacy of Nehru, an outstanding mediator in independent India
Much has been said about the
fascination with the world and the scientific spirit of the first Indian Prime
Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who died on May 27, 1964.
On his 57th day of death — which
comes at an extremely divisive time — it is important not only to see Nehru's
commitment to his beliefs but also to his ability to reach out to those with
whom he has never shared his views.
In 2021, this is less important
than Nehru's other major benefits: his contribution to the Indian state, to the
pursuit of higher education and the building of democratic institutions.
As Nehru, with a handful of people
who take the belief among the masses, rekindled and remembered by the open and
left-handed views of the country - and much to the dismay of many on the right
- his ability to find effective interdependence between the opposition is
rarely mentioned.
There are several examples of
Nehru's ability.
Reconciliation
Those who see him as a man
representing a science fiction should not only refer to his excellent
dissertation of Discovery of India but also address his address at Banaras
Hindu University in memory of its founder Madan Mohan Malaviya, after his
death.
An educated view in India tends
to believe that Nehru and Malaviya were contradictory: Nehru is a national
socialist and a conservative Hindu Levite. When Nehru criticized the Muslim
League and the Hindu Mahasabha in colonial times, Malaviya was the leader of
Congress and the Hindu Mahasabha for decades.
However, the aforementioned
statement in BHU - a rich tribute to Malawi — highlights the power of Prime
Minister Nehru, who rode on a grand scale, to see more clearly the power of
those who disagree with him.
Nehru said in his speech
Malaviya belongs to a generation where a few educated people in India are
western and even imitate everything western. “Malaviyaji therefore drew our
attention to the need to make only the best imbizos from the West and at the
same time to adhere to the precious heritage of Indian culture. He had a
thorough knowledge of European cultures and the English language. He had a deep
respect for Western science, ”says Nehru. “…. So somehow what he wanted to do
was to link European science with Indian culture, the new Western industrial
civilization and our ancient culture. This is exactly what we are trying to do
today. ”
He added, “He was a perfect
example of all that is good in our culture, which is a soft heart and
consistent values, his ability to build rather than destroy, and to build a
connection between opposing ideas. The line of judgment for any great man is
whether he is the builder or the destroyer. This is especially true in India
where the tendency to be careless is very strong, even if the leader tries to
unite or divide he gains great value. ”
These were not mere words. Nehru
really lived by them.
The first Nehru government had
two critics of his party, Congress, as minister: Hindutva leader Syama Prasad
Mookerjee and Drs. BR Ambedkar, who criticized Congress for its use of the
Dalits.
Former Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee will recall how Nehru as a prominent Indian leader could
appreciate his speech in Lok Sabha even though Vajpayee was a young politician
from Jana Sangh, a party that not only opposed Congress but had less than five
seats in Congress. Nehru even was kind enough to a rival who had very little
ideas about his age and status to introduce him to Nikita Kruschev as India's
future Prime Minister.
While Nehru set aside
Purushottam Das Tandon after independence - for what he saw as Tandon's
political system of government - to govern Congress, the Nehru Congress had
conservative Hindu leaders as prime ministers in northern and central India.
However, he would make the point that he would not only contact the Prime
Ministers but also arrive at a violent country to ensure the safety of a few,
often in the face of public violence.
Earlier, following in the
footsteps of his adviser Gandhi, Nehru became embroiled in a post-independence
uprising in Delhi when he personally fomented a mob attacking a Muslim man,
causing the mob to flee when they saw the outraged Prime Minister. .
These personal measures,
however, did not imply a witch hunt for those who disagreed with her or her
beliefs.
Science and culture
The same quest for reconciliation
informs Nehru's approach to knowledge. He is credited with fostering the wrath
of science and setting up many of India's top institutions such as IIT first,
IIM and AIIMS. However, this scientific outburst did not cause him to dismiss
the so-called “scientific” as pure myths and falsehoods, as did many educated,
arrogant people, decades later.
"Most of the myths and
stories of heroism in pregnancy and teach adherence to the truth ... Sometimes
a story is a pure myth, or at least a mixture of fact and fiction, an
exaggerated narrative of a cultural event," Nehru told The Indian
Discovery. "Facts and myths are so intertwined that they are inseparable,
and this amalgam becomes a fictional story, which may not tell us exactly what
happened but what is equally important - what people believe to have happened,
what they think heroic ancestors knew, and what good principles inspired them.
whether it is a fact or a myth, it became a living thing in their lives, taking
them from the hardships and evils of their daily lives to higher places, always
pointing the way to hard work and a good life… ”
In today's debate over history
and mythology, or the fury of science and the slightest weakness, Nehru's great
reconciliation could perhaps move things further.
Much has been said about Nehru
the institution builder or Ne
