- Two-time Olympic medalist in India, Sushil Kumar, has been arrested in
connection with a Chhatrasal Stadium dispute that led to the death of
international veteran Sagar Rana, police said on Sunday.
"Wrestler
Sushil Kumar has been arrested by a special police team," said CP Neeraj
Thakur, quoted by ANI news agency.
Kumar's
friend, who had been with him since Rana's death, was also arrested. The
arrests were made in the Mundka area of Delhi.
Delhi police
had recently announced a l 1 lakh prize for any information leading to the
arrest of a fleeing boxer Sushil Kumar.
Also, a
reward of ₹ 50,000 was announced for Ajay, who is also fleeing the same case,
Delhi police officials said.
An
altercation between the wrestlers was reported on May 4 in which some wrestlers
were injured and would be hospitalized and one of them died while undergoing
treatment.
Wrestler
Sushil is regarded as one of the most successful athletes in the country as he
won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, and four years earlier, he had
won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.
Earlier, the
Delhi Magistrate's Court refused to grant Sushil Kumar the expected bail,
saying he was the first conspiracy writer and the allegations against him were
serious.
Fearing arrest,
the international striker had filed a Rohini court in Delhi on May 17 seeking
the expected bail, confirming that the investigation against him was biased and
that no harm had been done to him.
In the
application, the actor has shown a willingness to join the investigation and
provide a “real and accurate picture of the incident” to help the investigating
company reach a reasonable conclusion.
"It
appears the statement of the victims has been recorded and allegations of money
laundering have been made. No detention inquiry is needed as there will be no
recurrence in the case of the applicant, "said Sushil Kumar's application.
He asserted
that his confession had been obtained through torture, but that his confession
had not been obtained through torture.
